36. JESUS: JUST A MORAL EXAMPLE?
The Christian Church is the confessional community where people believe in Jesus as Christ. If you just understand Christianity as a religion of imitating the moral and ethical example of Jesus, you will miss the core truth. A person is born again by believing in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior from sin and eternal separation from God (damnation) and by making Him the Lord of their life. Thus, their sins are forgiven, they are made righteous and justified to God through Jesus’ cleansing blood, and they become God's child. Those who are regenerated by the Holy Spirit and united with Christ then live according to God's commandments, His holy Word, which is the blueprint of happiness. In response to God’s grace and love, they worship Him and serve their neighbors.
UUMission emphasizes that Christians should live holy lives by God's grace and never forget their ethical, cultural, and social responsibilities (Galatians 2:16, Romans 3:28). “Christians” who bear no fruit either have never been born again and have no relationship with God or are superficial, nominal Christians, who are continuing to live for themselves instead of Jesus Christ.
Nevertheless, we do not emphasize Jesus as an ethics teacher or moral role model. We do not downgrade God's grace and the Cross of glory to a list of rules and laws that must be followed. We rely on the perfect, flawless righteousness of Jesus Christ. We get courage to enter God's holy place only by the innocent, shed blood of Jesus Christ, the saving power of our redemption.
