29. ENGLISH AS A GLOBAL LANGUAGE
English is used as an international language. In the case of the Amsterdam Netherlands and Katmandu Nepal, even a fish seller at the street market speaks English. A lot of Asian and African countries use English as a national language or their official language. Many countries use English as an officially recognized language or scheduled language.
The official languages of India, a country of about 12.6 billion people, are English and Hindi. Schools in neighboring countries, such as Nepal and Bhutan, are conducted in English. Before students learn to say “apple” in their own language, they learn to speak “apple” in English. Numerous island countries also use English.
